Arlington, Virginia, 1986. Jerry and Janie Murrell gave their five sons a choice, ‘Start a business or go to college?” The business route won and the family opened the first Five Guys – named after the five brothers.
To this day, the formula remains simple, ‘Burgers and Fries cooked to perfection’, in keeping with Jerry’s philosophy of “To perfect and to serve.” The family is also still very much involved, meeting every Tuesday with every member still very much part of the business.

We opened the First Five Guys in Arlington, VA
We opened 5 more Five Guys in D.C Metro area and perfected our business of making perfect burgers and fries
Our D.C Metro customers said they loved us, so we took Five Guys to Virginia and Maryland
Seems like people across the US wanted Five Guys so we decided to expand across the US and the rest of the world too!
The First Five Guys in London opened in July with queues around the block in Covent Garden and we even won the ZAGAT No1 Burger!
We opened 16 new Five Guys across the UK and knew we were onto something good when we won the Peach Breakthrough award.
We added 21 new Five Guys to our estate and picked up some more awards that included becoming a Cool Brand!
Our customers told us they wanted more Five Guys – so we opened another 16 restaurants
We added another 20 new Five Guys with a stunning new restaurant in Piccadilly Circus, London.
This was a big year for Five Guys – we opened our first restaurants in France, Spain and Germany and added another 10 in the UK.
We celebrated our 100th restaurant in the UK with a special celebration for our teams and customers in Five Guys, St Pauls.
This was a year like no other and despite the pandemic we are incredibly proud that we managed to retain all of our people and continued to see record sales in some of our restaurants - In true Five Guys ‘get it done’ style we still managed to open 10 new restaurants in the UK!
We opened another 25 new Five Guys and created over 1000 new jobs!
This year we opened 20 new Five Guys in some amazing locations.
This is a big year for Five Guys UK as we celebrate our 10th Anniversary with lots of celebrations with our people through the year and of course a lot more new openings to come.
